Virtual meetings are online real-time interactions that take place over the Internet. Speakers make audio or video presentations to participants who receive the transmission at their computer. While the participants do not enjoy the benefits of interacting face-to-face with other attendees, virtual meetings offer some unique and significant advantages over in-person meetings.
The most significant benefit is meeting costs can be 70% to 90% less than a in-person meeting. The savings from not incurring travel costs, food and lodging is substantial both to the participants and conference sponsors. By eliminating travel time to and from meetings participants have more productive time available. In addition, the environmental impact of the virtual meeting is significantly less. Without travel the carbon imprint has been reduced or eliminated. All the other sustainability issues related to in-person meetings are also eliminated, or at least minimized, such food and beverage waste, energy consumption, water usage etc.
Essentially there are three types of virtual meeting formats: webinars, webcasts and 3-D virtual meetings. EDI's focus is 3-D virtual meetings. 3-D images called avatars are used to represent the participants. The avatars offer a level of interaction that is not possible via webinars or webcasts. The avatars have the ability to move their body and speak. Through the use of avatars you create an opportunity for more participant interaction. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions during or after the presentation or to offer comments.
Break-out sessions can be created and formatted for interaction among the avatars to reinforce the speaker presentation content or introduce new material.
